For several
years Cognac has been shown to have new properties which have been
making the news.
The polyphenols
contained in Cognac, mainly as a result of ageing in new oak barrels,
have antioxidant properties which limit the oxidation of LDL (lipoproteins
which transport cholesterol) and also protect the DNA against the
action of genotoxic agents which can trigger cancers.

The town of
Cognac lies in the department of the Charente where many people
live to over the age of one hundred and it appears that life expectancy
there is higher than the national average. This appears to be due
to the fact that Cognac is drunk there on a daily basis.
